Nerdy Bits
Friday, August 28, 2009 at 5:42AM I stumbled across this post over at The Park Bench the other day, and it really made me feel like maybe my nerd-girl credentials are a little dusty. Mostly because I don't know who the fuck Liz Lemon is. But I have been slacking off a little lately in the nerd department. I mean - what if I got all NORMAL? The shame.
So, here's what's going on in my Nerd World lately.
Champions Online, the next big superhero MMO, is now in open beta (that means anyone can give it a go)(if they're willing to sit through a several-hour download, that is). So far, I give it a resounding 'meh'. I really, reeeeaaallly wanted to love this game, because superheros and MMOs are my 'thing', and I'm getting a tad jaded about my beloved City of Heroes, after a mere 4 years of playing it.
I know! I'm so fickle. Anyway, there are lots of clever things you can do in Champions (burrowing under the earth as a travel power? Okay, that's pretty cool), but most of the missions seem like a grind (kill X amount of X) and my artsy brain just can't get past the fact that it requires some video-card-on-steroids to render a game that's essentially in 2D. We get that it's a comic book game, you don't have to put a thick black line around everything. Honest.

Season 3 of The Guild came out on Tuesday. For XBox Live subscribers, anyway. Which I am not. So if you ARE, please shutthefuckup until it's available to the rest of us, m'kay?
(If you're unaware, which I was until recently, The Guild is a web-based series about a group of MMO players. Each episode is 3-5 minutes long. Even if you don't play MMOs, it's a freakin' hilarious look at the weirdness that has evolved out of relationships over the internet. Like, say, BLOGGERS. Ahem.)

Dollhouse, Season 1. Yeah, I know it came out on DVD a little while ago, but I just got around to watching it now. I wasn't super pumped about it. The plot sounded like an excuse for a lot of scantily clad women, and I always considered Eliza Dushku to be one of the few weak links in the Buffy series. I mean, anyone can play "bad girl with a vulnerable side", and she didn't even do the 'vulnerable' part that well in my opinion. But Dollhouse? Rocks. Eliza Dushku has totally upped her game, and the storyline so far is fan-fucking-tastic.

Faunasphere, that strangely addictive little web-based gem of a game that I wrote about a while back, is now live. Anybody can sign up and play for free, and they've added a spooky new world: The Swamp.
---
The first in Kevin Smith's new Batman series, The Widening Gyre, came out on Wednesday. The story has definite potential, though not so much the art.

Apparently Frank Cho and Doug Murray want ME to draw their upcoming comic, 50 Girls 50. ME! Well, okay, not me specifically. If you're a comic book artist, they want you to take a shot at illustrating the first 6 pages of the script, and they'll pick a winner.
Hey, I draw comics.
Fancy that.

I now know the difference between geeks and nerds because as a geek I hadn't heard of or understood anything in this post. What's an MMO? I am such a sad case.
Oh god, if I could be any woman in the world it would be Liz Lemon.
Never heard of MMOs, Liz Lemon or Eliza Dushku. I don't think that qualifies me as anything other than an idiot. Oh.
I love it when you talk nerdy to me. I have been playing wow on & off with my husband for a couple of years, and I'm getting bored with it. They did just announce the next expansion, though, and it looks like enough to shake up the game. More so than the last expansion which actually changed the game a lot, but not enough to capture my interest. I am so hard to woo. The Guild is HILARIOUS. Cliff gets the podcast, I think. And I think that Liz Lemon is from 30 Rock? Tina Fey? I really don't know, though.
Liz Lemon is my nerd idol.
You need to check out 30 Rock. It actually brought Alec Baldwin back into my good graces. (The Zulu commercials helped too.)
I don't know who Liz Lemon is, either, and I don't MMO. However, I was more than tickled pink to discover I could download Portal for the 360 because it has been freezing up my laptop of late and will we be playing Arkham Asylum this weekend until our thumbs cramp up? Indeed we will.
I only know Liz Lemon and nothing about anything else in this post. What does that mean?
It gives me warm fuzzies that I understood everything you were talking about in your post, AND it was very interesting to me. I am excited about FF's latest mmo but that doesn't come out soon enough for me. FFIV should be fun...FFXI was a blast.
You need to check into some Liz Lemon!
I love your nerdy bits posts.
And I really really want Champions to do well. I'm sorry to hear that it's meh. Since Atari bought Cryptic, if Champions sells enough we get another stock earn-out. So fly, little game, soar! ;)
Darn.... wanted to be the first to tell you to totally watch 30 Rock!!! Such a smartly-written show and really funny. You'll love it... and you don't need to have seen the first few seasons to be right on board. :)
Most of that post could have been written in German, as far as I am concerned anyway.
I do like Kevin Smith
And good luck on the contest! That would be good. I might even read that one.
the only nerd in me is I married one.
I'm ashamed to call you my friend if you don't know who Liz Lemon is.
What does it mean if you only understand the Liz Lemon part and nothing else? Am I crazy? Probably.
I really tried to get into Dollhouse, but I just couldn't.
Holy shit, it was like this entire post was written in Chinese. I didn't get any of it.
My husband, on the other hand, might think you're his soul mate.
I better never introduce the two of you. ;)
Now I have to check out the Dollhouse. I loved Eliza Dushku's bad girl attitude on Buffy, though you're right, she could have done the vulnerable part a bit better.
I'm not nearly as big of a nerd as I thought as I have no idea what any of those games are. I'm not much of a gamer though, I'm more of a book nerd. I take one with me wherever I go.
Have a great weekend.
Raven
You know that Dushku was the daughter in "True lies"?
I was all about Dollhouse when it came out and watched in on the Teevee but ALMOST gave upon it by episode 3. My husband and I were meh about it and then all of the sudden it got GOOD. And then WASH came in and made things even better. I just started Buffy on Hulu (yeah, I'm SUPER behind on that one) but I'm a huge Firefly fan, so I was happy. I think Eliza has really upped her game and she is less "tough girl" except when programmed and I like that.
Just found your blog. Hello. *waves*
I agree with the first poster. I think you crossed some sort of line into nerd-ville. But that's ok. Maybe you're the mayor of nerd-ville?
I was feeling alone in my cluelessness until I read Michele's comment and FoN's. Now I don't feel so out of tune with...were you talking about video games? TV shows? Am I old? What's going on here? Is Liz Lemon a kind of tequila?
I would marry Liz Lemon. She's fabulous. You should watch 30 Rock. I think you'd dig it.
Blink, blink.... blink... blink, blink... blink... No idea what your talking about! The shame of it I know!
I love Liz Lemon! I demand that you begin watching 30 Rock immediately!
I like Liz Lemon and I love Dollhouse! I can't wait until the new season starts! I am not a big gamer, I just don't have the attention span.
