She said, "It's all in your head."
Okay, not really. They don't say that. But she concluded that most of my menopausal symptoms are stress-related. More importantly, she made me really realize that. The consultation took over two hours, but this was the most important part of the conversation for me:
Me: "Blah blah blah-de blah, had baby, had mat leave, period came back when he was about 8 months old. It was normal for about 5 months, then it went haywire."
Her: "Was there any major stressor around that time?"
Me: "Not really. Well, I went...back...to work."
Her: "Hm."
Me: "...oh."
Then she hooked me up to a biofeedback machine, and I'm still reserving judgement on that one. While I do believe that our bodies are a mass of cells and therefore must produce energy fields, the concept of a machine that can read them - and give you hard data on what your body is made up of - seems like it should still be science fiction. I mean, why wouldn't ALL doctors have one of these? To be able to test iron/vitamin/whatever deficiencies without invasive tests or trial and error? Is the Western medical system THAT entrenched in their money-grubbing that they wouldn't use one of these?
Maybe. Anyway, I digress. She gave me some supplements and a diet regime (no cow dairy, wheat, red meat, or white sugar - I'm starting to think you can just kill me now, please) and sent me on my way, hopefully to begin menstruating properly again post haste.
So the proof is in the pudding (that I can't eat), I guess. If I resume relatively normal bodily functions, then I'm sold. Naturopaths, all the way.
Unless I need, y'know, something amputated or something. THAT I can do at home.

What the naturopath told me
this drunken rambling by Keely at 7:39 AM
This post is possibly about: I'm certifiable , i'm falling apart

25 people talked back :
I'm not surprised at all, either about the diagnosis of stress or the eating restrictions.
You are looking for another job, yes?
I buy in to the thought that stress can just really muck up our health - physically, emotionaly, mentally.
I worked with nurse (who had a ton of money and I could never figure out why she worked in the first place) who actually owned one of those bio feed back machines and she swore by it - and would adjust her diet, exercise, life around what that machine told her. It must have finally told her that living in Ohio was not a good thing because she now resides in sunny California.
Anyway, I hope you feel better soon and I hope you can elminate the major stressors in your life.
I believe stress is responsible for my 30 pound weight gain...not at all the tiny ice cream bar I have everyday! Good luck !
But then if you follow that diet and have PCOS it could also help relieve a lot of the symptoms so.... I guess you'll just have to judge for yourself. But it is interesting information.
Now, why would you cut any appendage off at home by yourself? From what us American's hear, you all have stellar medical insurance up there.
I am sold on natural and alternative medicines. I went to an acupucturist for months in order to become pregnant. He kept saying, "I can garantee you a baby." He was totally right! Nine months later we adopted Henners. (He didn't say I'd give birth...) But he did calm me down a bit.
Wait a second...does this mean you can't drink alcohol? Or you can only drink the hard stuff now?
Anyways, good news lady. Hope you're knocked up soon.
I LOVE my naturopath. They really do get you to step back and see how diet/stress etc can muck up how we feel.
Takes some time to let go of old thoughts....good luck!
no cow dairy, wheat, red meat, or white sugar...I WOULD DIE! Good luck! I hope it all gets better.
I do know that stress can really do numbers on your whole system. So I would give it a good serious try and see what happens. WTH!!
Sorry about the no sugar thing...that one will be tough since they put some form of sugar into everything!! UGH!
Hugs
SueAnn
Whoa, with that diet, I am sure you really will be a superhero in no time.
I don't know about the biofeedback machine. I always thought it was kind of a toy?
But I DO believe that stress can do weird things to your body, I mean, after all, stress is physical as well as mental. Sounds like you're having some breakthroughs.
Dammit, if I had only known in advance I wouldn't have sent you that cow shipment.
Seriously, hope this diet works out well.
With a diet like that, I'd be bleeding from more than one orifice.
Stress can do wonders to your body and mind. I can't live with out my Dairy! OMG!
Hey, that's great news! Not the diet part, obviously, but it makes sense that stress mucks up ovulation. Not to sound too hippie, but your body actually thinks it's doing the "right" thing by not adding more stress to your life via babies.
You can go back to eating pudding after you get pregnant, right?
Hope everything is back in working order soon.
Stress can be such a bitch sometimes.
As long as you can still drink......
Hmmmm, very interesting. Keep us posted!
Did she check your midichlorian count?
Good news, yes? Except for the diet restrictions...
Stress is one of those weird things. If you were told to go out and find some and then bring it back you couldn't. It's something we cook up ourselves. All a matter of perspective. Which is not to minimize at all what you are going through. I always wanted to try biofeedback. When my father had cancer years ago he tried it(he was a surgeon and only trusted western medicine but when you have been diagnosed with a deadly cancer you will try anything). He did chemo as well but figured he's do everything the doctors would allow him. He lived another 15 years with no problem. He said he enjoyed doing the biofeedback but it made him feel silly. Go figure.
Hope you go OTR again soon.
Stress sucks. It can affect so many things and usually all in a bad way.
Did she charge a lot for that? Cause I'm thinking I could have told you that the stress from your krappe job is causing you some major issues just from reading you blog. Ok, I might have had to fake the diet info, but I could have gotten close. Most people who tell you to eat healthy would agree with her diet plan.
At least it's been confirmed that your problems are solvable, and without having to amputate something or other, right?
Do you want us to put together a posse? I'm sure we could put a serious hurt on your stress inducers...
I eat a lot of dairy.
You know they always say, as soon as you stop trying, that's when you get pregnant... or in your case, maybe you'll start menstruating?! The point being, you need to chill the fuck out (CTFO). It will help you in more ways than just dropping an egg every month.
I see a homeopath and she is forever trying to get me (and the rest of my family for that matter) on a gluten free, dairy free, soy free, sugar free, taste free (oops did I say that out loud) diet. I'm been avoiding her to say the least. I have to at least try and cut down on Dr. Pepper and jarred cheese before I can even think about the rest of that. Good luck with your diet. If you see awesome results I want all the details.
